Highveld
Thatchers has developed African Thatching into a fine art, constructing
thatched roofs of the highest quality. The company also provides
various types of thatching material to the industry, both locally
and abroad. Value added services include treatment of thatching
material and an insurance programme.
THATCHED ROOFS
Highveld Thatchers has been in the business of thatching houses,
holiday resorts, hotels and game reserves since 1984 and has developed
African Thatching into a fine art. All work are done in accordance
with the minimum specifications (SANS 10407:2004 on thatch roof
construction (SABS)) for thatched roofs laid down by the South African
Thatchers Association (TASA) and "The Guide to Good Thatching
Practice" published by the Council for Scientific and Industrial
Research (CSIR). Highveld Thatchers also provide treatment against
biological degradation and fire and offers a special insurance programme
for thatched contructions. The majority of the company's work consists
of the thatching and construction of roofs for luxury houses, game
lodges, restaurants, hotels and resorts.
FIRE RETARDANT TREATMENT
Thatchsayf Fire Retardant Treatment to Thatched Roofs
Highveld Cape Thatchers can now offer our clients the only fire
retardant treatment tested in accordance with ASTM E108 as requested
by SANS10407: 2004 on Thatch roof construction.
Micon Thatchsayf Fire retardant has been tested and approved as
possibly the best method of rendering a thatch roof Fire retardant
by both the CSIR and FireLab.
The Thatchsayf fire retardant will be applied by high pressure spray
to both sides of the roof in accordance with the manufacturer Micon
Coating specification penetrating deep into the thatch.
Based on tests carried out by FireLab it was established that by
treating a thatch roof with Thatchsayf the radiation are lowered
from 12kW/m•'b2 to only 0.48kW/m•'b2.
By reducing the radiation intensity of the thatch roof, the risk
of the roof or house being damaged or destroyed by fire are also
drastically reduced.
Unlike the conventional sprinkler systems, the property owner does
not have to rely on mechanical/electrical water drenching systems
that are costly, require regular checking and maintenance and rely
on a supply of electricity and water for their operation. During
fire, electricity and water supplies can be and often are interrupted.
(Sprinkler systems have not been tested or evaluated in accordance
with ASTM E108 as requested SANS 10407:2004 on Thatch roof Construction
and can therefore not be classified as a approved Fire Retardant
system.)
With the Thatchsayf treatment, the fire protection element is inherent
into the thatch, regardless of external factors. Whilst the Thatchsayf
treatment appears expensive initially, the building owner should
recover the initial capital outlay over the years through reduced
maintenance costs and insurance premiums.
We have an agreement with the insurance company Thatch Risk Acceptances
