The
company was formed in 1984 as Highveld Thatchers and has grown ever
since. It is managed by a small team of competent professionals
and rely on a highly experienced and skilful workforce. The company
and its management have played a major role in the development of
the industry and in expanding markets abroad.
What started out as a small business run from an office in a residential
home in 1984 has grown into one of the largest thatching companies
in South Africa, with a multi-million rand annual turnover.Thatching
projects - some of them quite spectacular in scale - have been successfully
undertaken from the Western Cape to the far Northern Province. Beyond
our borders too - from Livingston, Zambia to West Palm Beach, Florida,
USA.
CONSTRUCTION
Highveld Thatchers was the first South African company to export
thatch grass to Europe. It also was the first company to adopt the
handling and packing systems that are in use in England and Germany
at present. This includes the standardisation of bundles sizes and
bales.
We were involved with the formation of the South African Thatchers
Association (SATA) with both national and international members.
TASA is highly recommended by the Council for Science and Industrial
Research (CSIR) and the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS).
Highveld Thatchers is regarded as one of the best thatching companies
in SA by a numbers of institutions, clients and competitors. In
2001 it was selected as best subcontractor on two hotel projects
for Sun International in Zambia.
Highveld Thatchers has Thatched many of the icons of Southern Africa
such as the Lower Sabie Rest Camp in the Kruger National park, Ushaka
Marine Park in Durban and the Sibaya Casino in KZN.
Highveld Thatchers' carpenters and thatchers are highly experienced
and skilful craftsmen. Some of the workforce has been working for
the company for the full 25 years of its existence.
In a continuous training program throughout the years, apprentices
have been trained by the qualified thatchers to become proper tradesmen.
As a matter of policy, no new thatchers are appointed but are trained
to a level that is in accordance with the company's high standards.
Management believes that a proper training program is of the utmost
importance in a highly specialised industry such as the thatching
industry and the only way to prepare skilled craftsmen.
Most of the thatchers employed by Highveld CapeThatchers are members
of the Shangaan tribe and historically lived in the far Northern
Province close to the Zimbabwe- and Mozambique borders. Traditionally
these people lived in thatched houses and the craft of thatching
was handed down from father to son. The Shangaan people are also
known for their artful wooden sculptures of African wildlife and
other objects.
The management of Highveld Thatchers is a small and highly competent
group of professionals who have the ability to handle any business
transaction. |
